(Only European Class of 2016)

Totally Transform Your Location Lighting in Just 2 Days

(Play Video to See a Class in Action)

Only UK Class of 2016 is London 20th & 21st June (London)

Would Lighting with more confidence help your Film Making?

Would you like to have your lighting setups look more refined as opposed to just adding lots more light to the scene and not get what you had imagined?

Lighting in a corporate environment with standard fluorescent's in the ceiling is one of the most challenging scenarios. Do you turn them all off? and what  if you don't have enough gear to light the room effectively, depending on the size of the room?

If you find interview lighting your greatest challenge, especially in office or classroom settings with horrible fluorescent lights...

Then I have a solution for you.

This Intensive 2 Day Class Will Transform You

The main objective is to get past the technical considerations of your camera system and to focus on the creative applications of lighting.

  • You will be engaged 'hands on' with the other attendees to light and shoot multiple interview sets ups including still life and  to create cinematic video that viewers and clients engage with.
  • It's a small yet tightly focussed group of committed film makers who want to apply practical solutions in real world environments.
  • A fast track for professional people who are short of time but are highly motivated to achieve a transformational growth in their film making skills when shooting video and want to master the cinematic look.
  • Learn to light quickly and take advantage of available location lighting is a craft worth mastering.
  • After only 2 days of 'hands on shooting' your film making confidence will have increased dramatically.

You Will Discover...

Together we'll be focused on fine tuning your exposure, framing and lighting. You'll be really mastering how to shoot and light interviews creatively and build creative sequences.

In addition we'll explore how to light using minimal lighting, shooting using prime lenses and using the tripod to simulate cinematic camera movement in as little as only 20 minutes.

The important factors in this unique method of training are learning to work fast but without compromising quality and understanding that by slowing down your approach, you get more done, shoot video that looks better, in the same time frame as only 'covering the action' in a more traditional way.

You'll Master By The End of Only Day 1!

Day 1 is focused on you learning a blueprint for how to create stunning looking interviews (sometimes known as talking heads) in confined spaces that on the surface do not look all that interesting.

You will learn how to position your subject in the right position to enable you space to light and how to do this in only 20 minutes. Creating the optimum distance between your background, your subject and your camera is absolutely fundamental to making the frame work.  Get any of these wrong and you'll quickly fail to achieve a balanced frame.

If you are not satisfied with how your interviews are looking then this series of set ups will have a profound effect on how you approach shooting these set ups.

You will also learn about deciding exactly how much 'looking room' your subject should have and master techniques for ensuring your 'eye-line' is not too profile and equally not staring uncomfortably down the lens barrel.

We'll also be spending some time on audio recording and how to achieve great sound regardless of the environment.

You'll Get a Step-By-Step Lighting Blueprint and Develop a Bullet Proof Creative Approach in How to Read and Use Light In Difficult Locations

You'll learn how to light with only 2 sources and also how and when to add a 3rd or even 4th light source- but you will also discover how to modify and control light using flags, nets, scrims, diffusers and other 'industry secrets' for achieving stunning looking shots.

Once lighting is set you will learn about microphone placement for optimum sound clarity and also how to avoid creating shadows that will distract the viewer.  This will be a big ah-ha moment for you, it's all so simple when you finally discover how simple this method is.

You will work in confined and bland spaces to help you master techniques using minimal lighting gear and  really absorb effective lighting techniques that will impress your clients and have the coming back for more.

Working with minimal lighting kit and having a easy to follow step-by-step process maximising how to create stunning interviews with only a few lights is what you will have mastered by the end of day 1.

You will shoot 6-8  different set ups on the first day and each will demonstrate a unique look and style.

By the end of day 1 you will have a renewed sense of confidence when creating great looking interviews and you'll be able to replicate the tried and tested blueprint I've successfully used filming over 3500 interviews in a career spanning almost 25 years.

The techniques I will share with you are not theory, but 'battle tested' solid principles that will work each and every time.

Here are just a sample of the types of set ups you will be LIGHTING

What you will be lighting by day 2

You might think lighting static objects is easier than lighting people but in most cases this exercise proves to be even more transformational than all of the in depth work you will have covered on day 1.

Working as a team you will work to 2 hour deadline and in this time you will light and shoot a 20 shot sequence that will be used to create a 30 second spec commercial and it will be for a challenging product.

The purpose of this exercise is to expand your creativity and forces you to dig deep into your imagination when creating dynamic shots in a very tight time frame. But you will be doing this under my guidance and so I will share with you methods of acquiring many different shots in very quick succession. There is a formula to mastering this technique that I will share with you.

Den will show you how to take shots that we’ll shoot together in a variety of challenging lighting scenarios that look flat and uninteresting and show you how to add life and dimension in the grade.

Den will teach you how to ‘see’ shots and create visually dynamic lighting and creative angles where you may think none exist. This event is a down to earth creative session that will push you beyond your usual film making comfort zone.

"Here's What Previous Attendees Had To Say..."

"I just completed the Cinematic Production Workshop which has been completely invaluable to me, particularly learning about lighting. I have taken a couple of lighting courses over the years, read a few books, but I don't think any of them have brought me up to speed as much as the class has over the past two days. I would definitely say I would need more practice but I now feel a lot more confident going back out there on my own and knowing that I'm on the right path, so it's a class well recommended, for sure"

Fiona Hecksher, London & Lagos

This is my second time at a seminar with Den and F-Stop Academy.  What is cool about these masterclasses is that all the time we browse online and we look at tutorials, but nothing compares to hands on training and practising and what I like most about this in particular is the small groups so you get to interact. I recommend it to anybody that wants to get ahead as fast as possible, to join any of these classes.   I highly recommend it!

Sergio Pizzolante - Miami, Florida

When I saw this opportunity to see the F-Stop Academy presentation, I couldn't miss it.  The business opportunity, in terms of meeting the folks out here, learning so much, especially learning about the business side as well as the film side was really critical for the stage of my company at this time so I was thrilled to be here to meet all the folks here in person - it was an awesome day, so for any of you that see these invitations in the future, please do not hesitate to go as they are well worth the time and money.

More Feedback On These Workshops

"Thanks a lot for a great workshop! I really enjoyed it.

I felt that I learned a lot from participating in such a relevant process. Rarely one gets to observe professionals at all stages of a process, and at the same time get hands-on and ask questions. This workshop really boost my confidence - I feel better equipped to carry out similar projects in the future. "

Sølve Huse-Amundsen, Oslo Norway

" thoroughly enjoyed the Masterclass and wanted to do it all over again when it came to an end!

All the contributors had invaluable knowledge to impart as well as being honest and good fun to talk to. I found the price of the course to be an investment rather than a cost, because what I learned could be translated straight into my work.

Thank you F-Stop Academy for a fantastic experience and I look forward working with you again!"

Daniel Nakamura-Craig, UK

"This is the right place for you if you want to increase your knowledge in this industry.

I have completed the video masterclass 2011 and found it really interesting, you learn really good techniques from well experienced people."

Franklin Cachia, Malta

"Following last weeks Masterclass with Den. I just wanted to offer a huge thanks and say how much I enjoyed the four day Masterclass course. It was so interesting and informative and at times really hard work (enjoyable) particularly on the day of the shoot. That day was a real eye opener to see how well the professionals work together to produce a stunning music video of Kelly Waters.

I took a lot away with me, I am hoping that I can use that valuable experience in improving my own film making capabilities."

Andy Demetriou, Broxbourne, UK

"I have really used the knowledge I have gained from this workshop to my advantage in projects that I have been working on since attending. I think one of the key take aways for me has been to "simplify" my lighting setups. Not only has it given me better images, but has also dramatically reduced my set up time.

I also really appreciate the attention to detail you gave all of us, and the quality time we had with you. The beer and pizza in the evenings was also a great time....the learning never ended :)"

Clint Regehr, Frisco, TX

"The course was a fantastic opportunity to see professional filmmaking up close and it represents an important milestone in my film making career."

Paul Welton, Hertfordshire, UK

"Thanks Den and thanks to the group, Sergio, Craig, Stuart and my buddy Mike. The experience was fantastic and I am working with more confidence applying the learned techniques. Looking forward to the next opportunity to advance my skill-set.

Also, thanks to Rachel, Steve and Jens of Zacuto!! Just a great community!"

Randy Noland, Mayseville,KT

"This is awesome. From the bottom of my heart I have to say this was one of my favorite learning experiences, the group of people was awesome and diverse so we got to learn not only from Den, who as everyone in this industry knows is very hands on and just great, but I also learned from everyone the group..."

Sergio Pizzolante, Miami,FL

"Den, thank you for a fantastic workshop...the experience was incredible! There is no substitute for hands on training in a small group like this. I was able to resolve a number of lighting issues that I had been struggling to improve on my own. The improvement in my lighting technique since the workshop is very apparent and I look forward to future lessons.

Clint, Sergio, Craig and Stuart great to meet each of you and a bonus working with all of you. Let's be sure to keep in contact. Randy always great collaborating with you in the Cincinnati area and it was an added bonus to collaborate during the workshop."

Mike Toffan, Cincinnatti,OH

P.P.S. Important...

This is not for everyone.  If you are a 'desktop film maker' who only buys gear to 'feel' like a film maker then this is probably not for you.  Film making can be a bit 'touchy feely ' but it is a business at the end of the day and I only want to work with serious and committed people - you don't have to want to make a living from it but you do need to take it seriously.
