VS Behind The Scenes
When we got the chance to be the first team in the world to shoot with the Sony NEX FS700, James and I put our heads together and wanted to make something that demonstrated the 200fps but also allowed us to light and create something unusual.
So as a drummer I thought it’d be cool to get an amazing musician to play fast and we shoot it on slow mo. (I’m really not that good so we got a proper drummer!)
James’s Wife Sara is a Brazilian Samba dancer so we had a great match for a head to head, Rock Drummer picked against Samba Dancer. The forces of rock vs the forces of Brazil.
The original idea was to play the drummer off with a dancer in a dual, but once we saw what the 200fps looked like, it made more sense to keep it all slow mo and the resulting film is what came out of it.
It will shoot up to 240 fps at 1920×1080, 480 fps at 1920 x 432 skipped readout interpolated to 1920 x 1080, and 960 fps with reduced resolution interpolated to 1920 x 1080.
The 200fps is pretty amazing.
Anyway here’s the Behind The Scenes film.

Thanks for the BTS. Without it, you can’t really see just how slow 240fps is. Getting to see the live action puts into perspective the effect of 240fps on the FS700. In the BTS Sara appears to be moving very fast, as well as the drummer. I never pictured them that fast from the slo mo film.

I always love BTS to see the production in action. I think what’s especially important to note is how much more light is needed to shoot at such high speeds. Based on the production stills there is spill everywhere but the 240fps footage cuts it down to 1/3 giving this video it’s amazing fashion edge. This is an exciting production and a great showcase of the FS700. Brilliant work!

We lit the film with 1K and 2K tungsten lights and no diffusion, I wanted to see how the camera handled hard light, And it did a pretty good job

[...] This second short is from DP Den Lennie of F-Stop Academy and Director James Tonkin of Hangman Studios. It really demonstrates the kind of dream-like sequences you can create with the camera’s slow-mo capabilities. You can find a behind the scenes video here. [...]

Thanks for sharing this. Couple questions:
1) Does the 8 seconds record time at 240fps mean 8 seconds of recording at 240p (1920 total frames), or just 8 seconds of final footage at 30p (240 total frames)?
2) Also, do you know if this is the same sensor as in the F3 (Exmor)?
3) And being an APS-C sensor, does that mean there is the same 1.6x crop factor on lenses as there is on the Canon 7D DSLR?
Thanks!

Hi Eli,
1) 8 secs of record time so you end up with around minut of real time playback
2) No it’s brand new 4K sensor
3) It’s a Super 35mm sensor which has a 1.5 x crop compared with Full frame 35mmm stills

Beautiful demo. Thanks for posting the BTS, too.
In all the online footage I’ve seen from this camera (including in Philip Bloom’s excellent review) I notice two image issues: splotchy artifacting, and occasionally a little stuttering in the slow motion.
To show these on YouTube and Vimeo, I realize they’re compressed considerably, plus Flash/mp4 streaming playback… it’s hard for me to tell where any degradation or playback glitches are introduced.
1) Since you get to see the camera original footage, how do you feel the quality of the image compares to, say, the Canon 5D Mark II?
2) Did you notice any playback glitches or dropped frames when shooting at 240fps?
3) Did you use an external recorder? If so, is there one you recommend? I am looking a the Sound Devices PIX 240.
Thanks! I appreciate the wisdom.

Hi Sandy
1) image is cleaner and nicer than the 5D MarkII – but these are very difficult cameras to compare so it’s not really a fair comparison.
2) No glitches on playback of original files or dropped frames.
3) we used an atomos Samurai but the samurai will not record a progressive output

We’ve been exploring this camera and your demo was a huge help to us. Seeing the behind the scenes really helps put into perspective realtime vs slo mo.
Thanks to all involved!

How exactly did you go about interpolating the footage that was 480fps and up?

The camera does it all internally
