How It Came About
In February 2013 SONY Japan asked if we could produce a film that would showcase three camcorders.
NEX-EA50, NEX-FS100 and the NEX-FS700. I approached Bruce Logan ASC and asked if he'd write a script. The result of our labour is Les Bohemes.
From commission to delivery was 6 weeks. We shot it in 3 days and it was edited in 1 week.
The whole premise of the project was to showcase how affordable Super 35mm camcorders could be used to make a cinematic short film.
Originally we started with a totally different script that I was going to shoot with James Tonkin who I have collaborated with on various projects including the FS100 launch film - 'Vertigo', The FS700 Launch Film, Duran Duran, A Diamond in the Mind, and most recently I did a couple of dates with James at Wembley for the 2013 Robbie Williams Tour.
However the script was deemed not appropriate for a global audience ( it was Seven meets Delicatessen - and ruled too 'dark') So while I was attending the ASC awards I spoke to Bruce Logan ASC and he agreed to write a new script. I first met Bruce on Zacuto/Kessler Revenge of the Great Camera Shootout
Comments from Writer/Director - BRUCE LOGAN ASC
"Les Bohemes is an eternal love triangle. Originally written in an hour to replace an existing treatment, I wrote a story with the locations Piccadilly Circus and a Mediterranean fishing village as a given. When the story was accepted I drew on the favorite movies of my youth, the French romantic new wave, to flush out the minimal storyline.
I realized the story I had written was of a similar structure to one of my all time favorite movies, Truffaut's "Jules and Jim," but with two women instead of two guys. I then drew from the movie in an unapologetic homage to this masterpiece of French cinema.
The result is "Les Bohemes," one of my most favorite and effortless creations.
